Are you unsatisfied with the colour of your teeth? Many patients express that the reflection they see in the mirror shows teeth that are not as bright as they used to be.
Why Teeth Stain
Teeth have microscopic pores that can absorb colour. Staining can occur for many reasons, including smoking or tobacco use. Your teeth can also become stained by regularly eating certain foods and beverages. Plus, teeth naturally start to darken as you age.
We have a solution!
Professional Teeth Whitening Benefits
Luckily, visiting our office for a professional whitening treatment can improve the appearance of dark, yellow, or brown-stained teeth.
Many patients appreciate a bright smile and opt for professional teeth whitening because it provides benefits that over-the-counter products do not.
- Professional teeth whitening penetrates the tiny pores in your teeth.
- Professional teeth whitening is generally safer and more effective.
- Applicator trays in pharmacy kits often do not fit well.
- Whitening pastes may be abrasive and cause sensitivity.
For these reasons, you may want to choose professional whitening instead. The whitening service provided by your dentist may consist of two phases – an in-office whitening session and a customised at-home kit to follow up.
We will take a before-and-after shade to measure your results.
In-Office Teeth Whitening
At Frankton Dental, we use the Opalescence Boost brand of whitening. We chose this product for its safety and its effectiveness.
Before we whiten your teeth, we recommend a professional cleaning. This will remove all traces of plaque and tartar, providing a clean surface to work with and the best opportunity for excellent results. We’ll also take impressions of your teeth, which are used to fabricate your home touch-up kit. We’ll also give you a special cream to apply to your teeth in preparation for the whitening procedure and reduce your risk of developing sensitivity.
On the big day, we’ll take a before picture, which will help us compare the results and measure your level of whitening. We’ll protect your lips and gums and then apply the whitening gel to your teeth. A special type of light activates the whitening gel, and the process begins. At this point, you can just kick back and relax!
After about an hour and a half, you’ll be done! We’ll remove the gel and take an after photo. You can expect to see improvement in one office visit!
We’ll provide you with the information you need to use your touch-up kit at home any time you feel like your teeth need some freshening up. If you have any questions, you are welcome to call our practice at any time.
Custom At-Home Teeth Whitening
If you prefer to whiten your teeth at your convenience, your dentist may provide you with a custom at-home whitening kit. Your applicator trays will be made just for you, and the strength of the whitening gel will be chosen to meet your needs. You will be given specific instructions for how to use it safely and to avoid side effects.
After this kind of whitening treatment, you will typically be asked to schedule a follow-up visit with our office to check on your progress.
Are There Any Side Effects?
A small number of people do experience some sensitivity following teeth whitening, but this is short-lived and usually lasts for only about a day or so. An over-the-counter pain reliever like paracetamol (Panadol) or ibuprofen (Nurofen) should resolve any discomfort. Avoiding hot and cold drinks for the first 24 hours after your whitening will also help reduce the sensitivity.
How Can I Keep My Teeth White?
Now that you’ve achieved your beautiful new smile, you’ll want to keep it that way! Follow these steps to help your smile stay bright:
- Brush your teeth after every meal (or at least twice daily).
- Floss daily before you brush at night.
- Use your Opalescence home touch-up kit when needed.
- Visit our practice every six months or as recommended for regular cleanings and check-ups.
